Taj Of India

If you’ve ever found yourself strolling down Cheap Street in Newbury and caught the scent of sizzling spices in the air, chances are you were close to Taj Of India. Nestled at 51-52 Cheap St, Newbury RG14 5BX, this cozy Indian restaurant has quietly earned a loyal following for serving up authentic Indian food that packs both flavor and comfort. Whether you're a fan of hearty curries, fragrant biryanis, or just on the lookout for a late-night food spot that won’t disappoint, this place deserves your attention.

One of the first things you’ll notice when stepping inside is the welcoming vibe. It’s casual yet charming - perfect for solo diners looking to grab a comforting dinner or friends gathering for a spicy feast. And for those concerned with accessibility, you’ll be glad to know there’s wheelchair-accessible seating, which makes the space inclusive and easy-going for all types of diners.

Let’s talk food - because that’s what you’re here for, right? The Butter Chicken is the kind of dish that hits all the right notes: creamy, rich, and just spicy enough to remind you it’s the real deal. Pair that with warm naan or a bowl of fluffy Veg Curry and Rice, and you’re already winning.

If you're more into grilled specialties, the Tandoori Chicken Tikka is something you shouldn't skip. It’s marinated to perfection, smoky from the tandoor, and served sizzling hot. Craving something indulgent and comforting? The Lamb Shank is melt-in-your-mouth tender, and perfect for a slow dinner. And of course, their Biryani-fragrant, well-spiced, and generously portioned-is a fan favorite for a reason.

Vegetarian or not, don't miss out on the Hara Bhara Kebab, Onion Bhaji, or the ever-popular Samosa Chaat. These small plates are ideal for sharing and work great as starters while you wait for the main course to arrive. For something crunchy and light to kick things off, the Popudoms and Dips combo never disappoints.

For drinks, they’ve got a solid list. If you’re in the mood for a cold one, Cobra Beer is the go-to-it pairs incredibly well with the spicy mains. The restaurant also serves spirits, wine, and even halal food, making it a versatile pick for all kinds of diners. Late-night cravings? You’re covered. Looking for a nice lunch spot in Newbury? Still covered.

Another thing that sets Taj Of India apart is the range of service options. Whether you want to enjoy your meal on-site, grab a quick takeaway, or get a no-contact delivery, they’ve got the flexibility to match your lifestyle. In today’s world, that convenience makes a real difference. They also offer catering, which is handy for office parties, family get-togethers, or even weddings where you want standout Indian dishes on the menu.

When it comes to dessert, the classic Gulab Jamun here is warm, syrupy, and just the right amount of sweet to round off your meal. Add a cup of their Indian-style coffee, and it’s a perfect finish.

People often compare Indian restaurants in Berkshire, and while there are several good spots, Taj Of India feels different. It doesn’t try to be overly fancy. Instead, it focuses on flavor, consistency, and comfort, which is probably why locals keep coming back. It’s popular for both lunch and dinner, and you’ll see regulars, newcomers, and solo diners alike enjoying their meals in the relaxed setting.

For those who value authenticity, affordability, and great service, Taj Of India is definitely a place to bookmark. It’s more than just another Indian restaurant-it’s a neighborhood staple that knows how to do Indian cuisine right.

A delightful spot with an authentic Indian kitchen. While I'm not typically a fan of Indian cuisine, the dishes here far surpassed anything I could cook. I highly recommend this place to anyone who enjoys Indian food - they offer both meat and vegetarian options. While it's not the cheapest (a starter, main, and two beers cost around £30), the quality of the food makes it well worth the price.

Best Indian by far! Great service and food always excellent quality. Love it here. Would travel here and choose this restuarant every time. Their banquet night is best value for money. Really nice place they care about their customers too.
